Skateboard and Longboard Maple

Marwood’s Rock Hard Maple (Acer saccharum), which can be purchased HERE,  is the most commonly used veneer for Longboard and Skateboard deck construction. Its characteristics of being hard, strong, and tough make for a great board, whether it be skateboard or longboard,  that can hold up through all of the wear and tear.

Longboard and Skateboard veneer is typically produced in three grades or plys: Face, Crossband, and Core. Usually, our crossband sheets are whole piece, but occasionally we may need to splice some. No more than 30% of the core and crossband sheets will be spliced; they should be used in the inner middle core of the longboard or skateboard. Splice lines in the outer core may telegraph through.

Marwood’s Standard Veneer Grades for Skateboard and Longboard Veneers

Marwood’s Face Grade material is what makes up the 1st and 7th layers of the skateboard sandwich and is what can be seen from the outside.

Marwood’s Core Grade Material is the 2nd, 4th, and 6th layers of the sandwich. The wood grain goes in the same direction as the face grade and adds flexibility to the board when made in this construction.

Marwood’s Crossband Grade is the 3rd and 5th layers of the sandwich. The grain goes across the direction of the other two grades and adds dimension stability.

Taking Care of the Veneer

Marwood’s veneer is shipped in crates to help the material withstain the shipping process. We have found that this significantly reduces damage  on its way to the customer.

Moisture Content – Standard range at shipping should be 8 to 10 percent.  PVA adhesives add a lot of moisture back in when cold pressed.  If moisture is over 12%, then the wood wants to move.

Storage – The veneer should be kept banded in the crate until you are going to use itto make your longboard/skateboard, or kept under heavy weight such as particleboard or plywood.  You do not want to leave it lying loose where it can dry out, buckle and crack.

Climate Control – Our warehouse is not humidity controlled.  However many of our customers who clip, splice, and press the veneer have humidity controlled work areas, and or storage.  Some have humidifiers to add moisture to the air.

Temperature Control – Our Warehouse has some heat in the winter, and no air conditioning in the summer.  Many of our customers do have heated and air condintioned work areas and storage areas.
